FAQs
Questions we get asked from time to time
Safety & Security
- How safe is travel in Ethiopia?
We understand your concern. Check out our dedicated security page for the latest information: [link to Security for Tourism in Ethiopia page on Gheralta website]
In general, Ethiopia is a safe travel destination. Unlike some other countries, tourists are not specifically targeted. While there have been internal conflicts in recent years, the biggest risk for travelers is usually inconvenience due to changes in itinerary. Mark, the founder of Gheralta Adventure Tours, frequently travels throughout Ethiopia to assess security risks. He would never recommend a destination he wouldn’t take his own family to.
Visas
- How do I get a visa?
Visa on arrival is available for most nationalities at Bole Airport (Addis Ababa) since November 2023. Check the Ethiopian government website for details: [link to Ethiopian e-visa website]
You can also apply for a visa online: [link to Ethiopian e-visa website] However, this process can be unreliable at times.
A one-month visa costs $80 USD, payable in USD, GBP, or EUR (cash). Three-month visas are also available for $200 USD.
Weather & Seasons
- When are the best times to visit the Ethiopian Highlands?
The best weather for the northern highlands is generally considered to be October, after the main rainy season (mid-July to mid-September). During the rainy season, trekking can be difficult due to muddy trails and frequent downpours.
Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:
- October – January: Dry season with mostly blue skies and cool nights. Ideal for trekking.
- February – May: Occasional showers (“Belg rains”) but generally dry.
- Mid-June – Mid-September: Rainy season with heavy downpours, especially in July and August. Some areas in Tigray receive less rain and remain suitable for trekking.
Festivals
-
When is the best time for festivals in Orthodox parts of Ethiopia?
-
Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany): Celebrated over three days in January. Processions, blessings, and colorful celebrations.

-
Easter: Especially vibrant celebrations with Good Friday ceremonies and nighttime church services on Easter Saturday.
Other Destinations
- When are the best times to visit other parts of Ethiopia?
The Danakil Depression is hottest from November to March. The Omo Valley has rainy seasons from April-June and October. The Bale Mountains experience a small rainy season from April-June but are still pleasant to visit with wildflowers. The best trekking season is from mid-October to March.
Dietary Needs
- How is Ethiopia for Vegans & Vegetarians?
Great news! Ethiopian Orthodox fasting practices result in many vegan dishes being readily available throughout the year. These dishes exclude dairy and meat, with fish optional for some. There are two main fasting seasons:
- 44 days leading up to Orthodox Christmas (January 7th)
- 55 days before Orthodox Easter (variable dates)
Wednesdays and Fridays are also traditionally fasting days throughout most of the year.
Climate Change
- Effects of climate change in Ethiopia?
Ethiopia is experiencing the effects of climate change, with unpredictable rain patterns and drier conditions in some areas. So far, the highlands have seen increased rainfall, but arid regions face more drought.
Bringing Equipment
- Can I bring binoculars to Ethiopia?
Binoculars under 12x magnification are allowed without a permit. Higher magnifications require a permit, which can be a lengthy and challenging process.
- What about other equipment?
Handheld GPS devices, drones, telescopes, and compasses are currently not allowed for tourists. We can try to help you obtain permission for essential equipment, but this is not guaranteed.
Travel Insurance
- Can I get travel insurance for areas marked unsafe by some governments?
Yes, even if a region is marked as “orange” or “red” by some governments, you might still be able to get travel insurance. We recommend checking with specialized travel insurance providers.
COVID-19
- How is COVID in Ethiopia?
There are currently no COVID-19 restrictions in place. While the virus did impact Ethiopia, it wasn’t as severe as in many other countries. You may still see some people wearing masks.
